This survey is being conducted by the Expanded Learning Opportunities Council (ELOC). PARENT ED

Thank you all for contributing to a successful and resourceful parent ed experience across Issaquah School District this past year.  We increased parent ed attendance at most schools, and offered more frequent speakers and topics than previously.  Parents are showing interest in attending other schools to hear a worthwhile topic or speaker; in 2015-16 these were mostly around social lives (digital media, dating, playground behavior), and anxiety/mindfulness.

Thanks to your input and contributions, in 2016-17 Issaquah PTSA Council Parent Ed is moving in a new direction to support even more access to parenting information.  After meetings and input from Parent Ed Reps and PTA Presidents, we pleased to announce the new parent ed program for 2016-17:

  • New name:  Issaquah PTSA Council parent ed is becoming Parentwiser, and will link to a separate webpage parentwiser.org next fall.
  • Speakers, film documentaries, webinars for the 2016-17 school year will target the following topics:
  1. Achievement
  2. Technology (use and abuse)
  3. Parenting in competitive activities/sports
  • Calendar of events – by popular demand, we will be hosting 3 showings of Screenagersfor parents and teens this fall; watch for details and updates in September!
  1. Sep 29th at Liberty High
  2. Oct 11th at Issaquah High
  3. Oct 19th at Skyline High

Other speakers and dates are in progress, to be confirmed soon.

  • The Parentwiser committee seeks volunteers, please let us know if any of these openingsfit your talents/interests:

o   Content/Relationship Booking – Debbie Steinberg-Kuntz, Lauren Hutchinson

o   Treasurer/Statistics – OPEN

o   Marketing communications/advertising – OPEN

o   Facebook/Twitter management – Arissa Peterson

o   Email/database communications – Tara Moe

o   Facilities Coordinator – OPEN

o   Issaquah PTSA Council and ISF partner – Heidi Fuhs

o   Members at large (content contributors) – Dea Barnett, Carla Geraci, Margarita

  • Please keep a parent ed rep on your PTSA!  You will be key for advertising Parentwiserevents to your school population.  (And, while each school is contributing a recommended $250 in council fees for large scale speakers, film documentaries and webinars, you may still hire local speakers to increase attendance at membership meetings.  You can keep these in-school, or advertise through Parentwiser for district-wide attendance.  You can charge non-PTA members to attend (eg $5-10).  You may want to retain a small budget and a parent ed rep for these purposes.)
  • Send us your PTA/PTSA Communications contact  – We are collecting names for each school parent ed rep and communication chair for 2016-17 to get Parentwiser dates in ENews quickly. Please let us know your contacts for next year!

Thanks again for supporting parent education and striving to keep Issaquah parents informed.

TREASURER

2016-2017 Budgeting Information:

Although Council has not officially approved our 2016-2017 budget (this will occur at our May meeting), here are the proposed budget changes that will affect the local PTSAs.   I wanted to make sure you were aware of these changes as you are working on your budgeting for next school year.  Here are the items to make sure are in your budgets:

  • Council Dues – Elementary $310, Middle $285, and High $260 ($50 increase).  We haven’t raised Council Dues in many years and this increase is necessary to keep up with the rising cost of things such as space rental, supplies, etc.
  • Survey Monkey – $11 – No change
  • Council Parent Ed Fee – $250 minimum (increase from $100) As we have discussed at the last few Council meetings, we are changing our approach to Parent Ed beginning next year.  We are aiming to provide higher caliber speakers next year as well as offering webinar options.  When our Council Parent Ed chair surveyed the presidents a few weeks ago, most were very supportive of this change and were all willing to donate more than $250.  Please discuss with your president/Board to determine how much your school is willing to give.  $250 is the minimum we are asking for but if you are willing to donate more, it would be greatly helpful in getting this new program going.
  • Art Docent Training – Free!  ISF will now be funding Art Docent Training so elementaries will no longer need to budget $75.00 for Art Docent Training!
  • New Gibson Ek High School Donation – Gibson Ek High School will be chartering their own PTSA later this spring.  It is customary that when a new PTSA is established, that all other PTSAs include a donation to the new PTSA in their budget.  The suggested donation amount is $250 for elementaries, $500 for middle schools, and $1000 for high schools.  This is just a suggested donation amount so any amount your PTSA feels comfortable donating will be appreciated.
  • ACT Program/Echo Glen – Please remember that donations are suggested the ACT Program and Echo Glen school, neither of which have their own PTSA.

Other Organization Support:

Volunteers for Issaquah Schools – Even though we won’t be running a bond/levy campaign next year (hopefully), it is always suggested that donations we made every year to VIS to help them build up a balance to run the next bond/levy campaign.

Issaquah Schools Foundation – Again, remember a donation to ISF in your budgeting process.  Many schools give a donation to the All in for Kids campaign in the fall, and another donation at the luncheon/breakfast in the spring.

Postage – Several questions have come up on the various amounts of postage that local PTSAs are asked to help with.  The first is the “3 Things Postcard”.  This is the postcard that comes out at the beginning of the year from ISF/VIS/PTSA.  The share your PTSA is responsible for depends on how many students you have.  The amount is pretty similar from year to year so please refer to how much you paid this year for budgeting for next year. You will receive an invoice from ISF in August/September for your portion of the mailing.  The second one is the VIS mailing.  This only occurs during a bond or levy campaign year.  This year, the amount ranged from $100-$400 depending on the size of your school. This only needs to be in your budget in a bond/levy year but many PTAs just leave it in so it doesn’t get forgotten.

PARENT EDUCATION

1)    We’re excited to update you on some important developments in our Council sponsored parent ed.  Over the past few months, we’ve been taking a close look at parent ed events in our district and proposed some changes to make it even more convenient and relevant moving forward.  Please see the attached vision, which we proposed at the February PTSA Council meeting, for more information. We’ve been getting very positive responses from parents like you, PTSA Council, the Issaquah Schools Foundation, the Issaquah School District administration, and even external partners like Swedish Hospital.

Our goal is to create a sustainable model of parent education that gives parents in our school district the latest tools, strategies and information to be the best parents they can be, conveniently and affordably, and as a tangible benefit of PTSA membership. When parents have the information to parent well, their children’s brains can develop optimally, allowing them to live up to their true potential.

You are an important part of this vision. We’d like to get together with you this month and brainstorm speakers for our district for next year. To realize a speaker series, we need to book them this spring.  What speakers do you love? Who should be included in our annual lecture series, either in-person or via webinar?  What do you want to learn about as a parent? Ask around your school community, and let us know, we want to hear from you!

Presidents and/or Parent Ed Reps, please join us for a topic brainstorm in the lobby of Swedish Hospital, near the Starbucks, on Wednesday, April 20 at 10:30am.

We look forward to seeing you there!  If you can’t attend, please send us your comments via email by April 20th.

And below are the parent ed events remaining in April and May planned in our district.    Look to each for the age-targets and if applicable to your school population, and please post the details to your school ENews, PTSA websites, calendars and Facebook/Twitter.  See flyers attached to post to your bulletin boards, etc.  (Additional flyers for some events not attached here will be coming soon).

And please send a message to parent-ed@issaquahptsa.org if your school is planning something that got missed below!  We would love to add you to the list to give all Issaquah parents the opportunity to attend.

TREASURER

Treasurer Notes for 2015-2016 Budgeting:

As you begin your budgeting for next year, I wanted to alert you to some potential changes.  Once Council has our budget finalized, we will be able to provide more specific information.  Stay tuned!

  1. ISF will now be funding Art Docent Training so elementaries will no longer need to budget $75.00 for the training (yeah)!
  2. Council Dues which are currently $260 for Elementary, $230 for Middle, and $210 for High Schools will be raised approximately $50/year.  We haven’t raised Council dues in many years and we need to do so in order to keep up with rising costs.
  3. The Parent Ed Fee which is currently $100/year, will be going up by an amount yet to be determined.  We will discuss this is more detail on Thursday.

PARENT EDUCATION

In preparing for our Issaquah PTSA Council meeting this week, please think about our Parent Ed proposal from last month and come prepared with how much your PTA unit is willing/able to budget for a more proactive, high profile, and/or technological delivery of district-wide Parent Ed events going forward.  During the meeting we will request your preferred budget increase for Council Parent Ed to either:

1)      We prefer to keep most Parent Ed local to our school only, increase only up to about $250-350/school for Council funded Parent Ed,

or

2)      We believe in pooling and distributing district efforts, collect up to $XXXX/school  (or $X/FTE) and give us the best national speakers & webinars available. (XXXX=how much your school PTSA is willing to spend on district Parent Ed efforts).

Heidi pass around a sheet toward the beginning of the meeting reflecting the 2 choices above, to collect a surveyed response of budget priority by end of meeting.   We will use the results of that to help determine the budgeted Council Fees for 2016-17.

VOLUNTEERS FOR ISSAQUAH SCHOOLS (VIS)

Every Monday VIS will be sending PTA Presidents and VIS Reps an email with a couple of Bond Facts and a JPG Image (or two) which you can post on your website, send out in your Enews, and/or put in your Newsletter. Some people asked for these facts to post on their Facebook page, so these can be used for that too.

Thank you all SO MUCH for your help with this campaign. Your involvement will help get the word out about how important the 2016 Bond is for our community.

Also Attached is the Volunteers for Issaquah Schools Bus Logo with the April 26thvote by date on it 🙂

Since schools usually have a link to our PTA webpages we need to put this logo 1 click off the main page – on your VIS or Advocacy Page.

Please remind your school community to vote early – Spring Break is right in the middle of the ballot return time, so a friendly reminder to possibly “Vote Early!” or “Vote before the break” may be helpful in getting ballots in!

IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER:

For those of you who have already Endorsed the Bond (THANK YOU SO MUCH!) You can advocate for the bond – you can say “PLEASE VOTE YES” or “VOTE YES”. But remember, if you send that “YES” wording out – you need to use your own PTA database and your PTA needs to send out the info (can’t say VOTE YES through the School Enews or through the School Office database).

Everyone can send out Facts about the Bond through the School’s news. Just the VOTE YES part needs to be only through your PTA (schools can’t say VOTE YES, they can only present the facts…) Hope that is not too confusing. Just want to make sure that we follow these rules – it is very important…

LINKS TO INFORMATION:

Here ARE this week’s facts to share, post, etc. (and thank you again for your help!) (there are 2 facts, paired with a graphic image below for each fact)

What is a School Bond?

The State of Washington does not fund the regular building or maintenance of public schools. Instead, local voters must approve school bonds for this purpose. Similar to a mortgage, bonds may be paid for over 20 years, helping to keep annual costs lower for taxpayers. Issaquah School Districts current bonds are, on average, paid off in nine years. The shorter duration saves taxpayers’ money. For more information, visit our 2016 school bond information page on the ISD website. For information on current and past school construction, visit the Capital Projects website!

Here are JPG Images of the VIS Logo to use as needed – Color April 26, B&W April 26 and Standard VIS without date:

Issaquah School Bond – Growth and Building

Our District has grown by nearly 5,000 students in the last ten years and is projected to grow an additional 1,500 to 2,000 students in the next five years. This chart shows how the ratio of students to school buildings has increased. More facilities are needed to meet the demand for classroom space. For more information, visit our 2016 school bond information page on the ISD website. For information on current and past school construction, visit the Capital Projects website!

WASHINGTON STATE PTA FOCUS DAY IN OLYMPIA IS ALMOST HERE– WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 3RD

Please join Washington State PTA members from across the state on Wednesday, February 3rd in Olympia for our biggest advocacy event of the year – Focus Day 2016.

Your presence will help us put education front and center with our lawmakers during the upcoming legislative session. Children are welcome to attend.

The event is free, but please register to attend Focus Day 2016 here.

WHY DOES IT MATTER?

Did you know, despite the fact that the WA State Constitution says our State Budget must fully fund education, only 62.3% of our Issaquah School District funding for general operating costs comes from WA State? A full 34.6% is generated through local fees and the Maintenance and Operation (M & O) Levy.

There’s been progress; in the last 2 years, the legislature added funding of all-day Kindergarten and half of the needed funding for K-3 class size reductions, but those funds didn’t include funds for building the new classrooms to put those smaller classes in. So where will we put them without more funding and changes to the State’s funding structure and allocation for capital improvements and additions?

We have momentum, and we need to say thank you to our legislators for making this happen. But we’re not done, and we need to keep the momentum going. Help us tell our legislators to fully fund education NOW!

From ISD: April 26, 2016 School Bond Election Information

Why do we need a school bond now?

Enrollment Growth
Rapid and continued growth in the District has resulted in an increase of enrollment by 2,000 students in the past four years. Our schools are fast becoming crowded and we conservatively project enrollment growth to increase by 1,500 to 2,000 students over the next five years.

Full Day Kindergarten and Smaller Class Sizes
State requirements and our own desire to provide free full day kindergarten for all students and reduce class sizes also result in the need for more classrooms.

Land Availability
Property to build schools is becoming scarce and waiting will result in fewer viable options for school sites. In addition, recent interpretations of the Growth Management Act reduce our options for locating schools.

How much is the bond and how will it affect my taxes?
The school bond on the April 26, 2016 ballot is  $533.5M. Residents can expect to see no increase in tax rate as a result of the passage of this bond measure.

What about the 2012 Bond?
Thanks to our voters, we are completing the build out of the projects in the 2012 Bond. We have expanded and remodeled Apollo Elementary, Issaquah Valley Elementary, and Maywood Middle School. Additionally, Liberty High School was rebuilt and remodeled. We are currently rebuilding Issaquah Middle School, Sunny Hills Elementary, and building the new Gibson Ek choice high school for a fall of 2016 opening. We will begin the rebuild of Clark Elementary in the summer of 2016 for a fall of 2017 opening.

For more information, including a list of projects and a quick fact sheet is available at on our District website.

OUTREACH / F.A.C.E.

Holiday Gift BarnThis program serves 1,200 children in the Issaquah School District each year. We turn Pickering Barn into a huge toy store where parents can choose 3-4 gifts for each of their children, plus stocking stuffers. We also have a wrapping station and child care so the gifts can stay a surprise until Christmas morning.
The Holiday Gift Barn is still in need of volunteers and donors, openings throughout the week, Dec 7-10.
Please check out the website for more details. https://issaquahfoodbank.org/holiday-gift-barn
The Lunch For The Break program is working to make sure students have enough food even when school is not in session. Lunch for the Break provides a free box of grocery items for each student in the family that can be used to make breakfast, lunch and snacks. Schools being sponsored for Winter Break are Apollo, Briarwood, Clark, IVE, IMS, Maple Hills and Sunset.
Lunch For the Break is currently in need of more donors. With this morning’s updated registration information, there are about 40 more children registered than boxes of food. These numbers will be changing over the next week as we approach Donation Day on Dec. 16, and with your help, we hope to see that gap close.
Please visit the website for information on how to donate ! www.LunchForTheBreak.com

PARENT EDUCATION

Skyline HS, Library

(for parents of grades 6-12)

Safe Dating – Talking to Your Teen helps parents learn more about teen dating abuse and gives parents the tools they need to discuss it with their teens.  Talking to your teen early is the most important step a parent can take to ensure that when they start dating, they clearly understand what a healthy relationship involves.

See flyer attached.

That’s it for January.  Let Heidi know of any additional events you are planning so we can spread the word.

REFLECTIONS

All School Hand-in date was November 20th.

Out of 24 schools in the district, only one school (Liberty ) did not submit any entries. They did have a chair, Sally Smith, but she said they unfortunately did not receive any entries this year.

We received a total of 266 entries plus 9 special artist entries.

Literature: 40 Music Composition: 18 Dance Choreography: 8 Film Production: 8 Photography: 28 Visual Arts: 155

According to the new rules, we are able to submit 20% of our entries. So, 53 plus 8 special artists can go through to the State Level.

All schools received invitations to the Reception on January 12th, when they dropped off their entries. These were to be given to their finalists, PTSA Presidents and Principal. I have extras if anyone would like me to send them one.

Regarding the Reception, Issaquah High School, was booked back in September and I have confirmation in writing.

The judging is currently underway, the ribbons have been ordered, I am working on inputting the names into the Reception Program. In summary, everything seems to be moving ahead smoothly.
