2016 Legislative Issues Survey

Help Washington State PTA Speak Up for Kids! Please take the 2016 Legislative Issues Survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/R8Z2HWG

Our vision is to make every child’s potential a reality. PTA works in classrooms and communities across the state, but we also advocate in Olympia for the well-being and education of all children. Every fall, the association selects its legislative priorities, and hearing from you is a valuable step in the process. Your responses will assist voting delegates who attend Legislative Assembly in Olympia October 21-22, 2016 in setting the 2016-17 legislative platform.

The survey closes on October 6th at 12:15 p.m.

Parent Night Sessions Hosted By ISD & ISF

Parent Night Sessions
The Issaquah School District and Issaquah Schools Foundation invite parents to attend Parent Night Sessions Presented by Brandyn Roark Caires and Kire Dassel from Brooks Powers Group – see below for information on speakers.
Session 1: Positive Parenting:
October 19, 2016: Issaquah High School 7-8:30 PM

This training focuses on how to reframe and shift our thinking about kids and parenting by using key strategies and skills based in positive reinforcement and how to set firm, consistent, and kind limits; while understanding the stages of the developing brain.

Session 2: Parenting the Developing Mind
November 7, 2016: Issaquah High School 7-8:30 PM
This training is a culmination of brain science and research for parents about how and when children’s minds/brains develop and how they can “follow, shape, and guide” the needs of their child’s developing mind from kindergarten to adolescents. We discuss key components in knowing what we can expect from our children at various stages in their development. In addition, you will learn how to identify when or if your child needs additional support to manage life’s hurdles.
Session 3: Helping or Hindering
March 2, 2017: Issaquah High School 7-8:30 PM
This training focuses on understanding our own caretaking and parenting styles (permissive, authoritative, authoritarian, etc.) and how they affect a child’s developing mind and their behaviors. We will introduce and explore several ways of problem solving with children, by using different parenting techniques, styles, and approaches.

PARENT ED

Thank you all for contributing to a successful and resourceful parent ed experience across Issaquah School District this past year.  We increased parent ed attendance at most schools, and offered more frequent speakers and topics than previously.  Parents are showing interest in attending other schools to hear a worthwhile topic or speaker; in 2015-16 these were mostly around social lives (digital media, dating, playground behavior), and anxiety/mindfulness.

Thanks to your input and contributions, in 2016-17 Issaquah PTSA Council Parent Ed is moving in a new direction to support even more access to parenting information.  After meetings and input from Parent Ed Reps and PTA Presidents, we pleased to announce the new parent ed program for 2016-17:

  • New name:  Issaquah PTSA Council parent ed is becoming Parentwiser, and will link to a separate webpage parentwiser.org next fall.
  • Speakers, film documentaries, webinars for the 2016-17 school year will target the following topics:
  1. Achievement
  2. Technology (use and abuse)
  3. Parenting in competitive activities/sports
  • Calendar of events – by popular demand, we will be hosting 3 showings of Screenagersfor parents and teens this fall; watch for details and updates in September!
  1. Sep 29th at Liberty High
  2. Oct 11th at Issaquah High
  3. Oct 19th at Skyline High

Other speakers and dates are in progress, to be confirmed soon.

  • The Parentwiser committee seeks volunteers, please let us know if any of these openingsfit your talents/interests:

o   Content/Relationship Booking – Debbie Steinberg-Kuntz, Lauren Hutchinson

o   Treasurer/Statistics – OPEN

o   Marketing communications/advertising – OPEN

o   Facebook/Twitter management – Arissa Peterson

o   Email/database communications – Tara Moe

o   Facilities Coordinator – OPEN

o   Issaquah PTSA Council and ISF partner – Heidi Fuhs

o   Members at large (content contributors) – Dea Barnett, Carla Geraci, Margarita

  • Please keep a parent ed rep on your PTSA!  You will be key for advertising Parentwiserevents to your school population.  (And, while each school is contributing a recommended $250 in council fees for large scale speakers, film documentaries and webinars, you may still hire local speakers to increase attendance at membership meetings.  You can keep these in-school, or advertise through Parentwiser for district-wide attendance.  You can charge non-PTA members to attend (eg $5-10).  You may want to retain a small budget and a parent ed rep for these purposes.)
  • Send us your PTA/PTSA Communications contact  – We are collecting names for each school parent ed rep and communication chair for 2016-17 to get Parentwiser dates in ENews quickly. Please let us know your contacts for next year!

Thanks again for supporting parent education and striving to keep Issaquah parents informed.

Watch the trailer at:http://www.papertigersmovie.com/ .  Before and after the film, Issaquah School District personnel will discuss real statistics in Issaquah schools, how common experiences and even divorce of parents affect our kids behavior, and our own community efforts to positively influence classroom learning for all students.

We will be collecting them at our next our PTSA Council meeting which is May 12th from 9:15-12:30pm at Pickering Barn in Issaquah.

If you can’t drop them off, then please give them to your PTA President who can bring them to the PTSA Council meeting.

Let me know if you have any questions or I can be of help!

Thank you again!

VIS – 2 Days Left to Vote!

Hi PTA Presidents, VIS Reps, Communication Directors and VIS Supporters,

This is it! 2 days! This is the final push to get ballots in and Yes Votes by Tuesday! Yay! Thank you all so much for your help getting this info out! 🙂
*******Reminder****** You are ALL Invited to a VIS Election Night Party this Tuesday, April 26th 7-9pm
Hosts: Volunteers for Issaquah Schools
Where: email Alicia for address.
When: 7-9pm (arrive anytime after 6:30, ballot results posted at 8:15pm)
Please join us! Any questions email Alicia at alicia@visvote.org

Please see below for final Ballot Return messaging info and a JPG image of a graphic to share or post asap.
Please post on Facebook and send out on your Enews Monday or Tuesday morning!
Please communicate to your parents, neighbors and community members  how important it is to get their ballots returned by THIS TUESDAY and to VOTE YES for this bond measure.  Issaquah has passed its bonds and levies for the past several years, so some people may feel like their 1 vote won’t matter… please tell them the bond needs a supermajority (60% + 1) approval to pass – SO EVERY YES VOTE matters and makes a difference!
Final Honk & Wave is tomorrowMonday April 25th AM&PM. This is our final community wide effort to remind EVERYONE to VOTE YES and get their ballots in. Please bring your friends and kids for this last community effort to remind people to vote!  Here is the sign up genius link:  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c084eabae2aa0f94-2016/
All LIT Drop pieces should be out by today – Sunday April 24th. Please recycle any extras. Thank you all so much for your help getting this info out to our community!

Missing your ballot? Click on the link below for a replacement!  If you have a printer you can mark and print your replacement ballot easily online!

Phone Bank Canceled

There will be no phone bank tonight at the KCLS service center. After much discussion and in consideration of our volunteers we decided to record a new robocall targeted for people who have not returned their ballots (as of Friday). We recorded it Friday night (with 4 students) and that robocall will go out this afternoon.

Please save your energy and rest up for our final Honk & Waves tomorrow – Woo Hoo! Thank you for your support!

We will be sending out the final .jpg graphic and messaging tonight or early tomorrow on a separate email for a final push to get the ballots in.

Thank you again for ALL of your help to reach our community and get those YES VOTES!
