Issaquah PTSA Art Docent Program
Thank you so much to our Curriculum Committee that met this summer; Laurelle Graves, Leah Chambers, Rachelle Roberts, Heather McClure-Coleman, Jeanne Crowne, Angela Bizzari, Angie Warren and Rebecca Morrissey.
They clarified our purpose and direction, reworked teaching goals, created a lesson plan format, reviewed lessons and developed creative ways to support our docents and students. All of their work enabled us at the Issaquah Schools Foundation to make a case for additional funding to standardize, revise and enhance our lesson library for everyone’s benefit. Well done!
-Juliette Ripley-Dunkelberger, Art Docent Program Director, Issaquah Schools Foundation
The Issaquah School District has over 350 art docents each year providing over 4,500 hours of volunteer instruction at the elementary school level.
The Art Docent program’s purpose is to support the state’s Visual Arts Grade Level Expectations K – 5 while offering students a positive experience with art by exposing them to various materials and artists. We introduce the elements and principles of art, art vocabulary, safety, art criticism and art’s influence on culture. The volunteer Art Docents teach four to eight art lessons in each elementary classroom per year.
Ruppert’s report Critical Evidence shows that kids with over four years immersion in the arts have SAT verbal scores 58% points higher and math scores 38% higher that kids with half a year or less. When Carnation Elementary imposed an ArtsEd arts-teaching program, reading scores climbed 23%, and 70% fewer kids got sent to the principal’s office. (From City Arts, Nov 2010)
Thanks to a grant from the Issaquah Schools Foundation in 2002 we have an outline which includes: topics for each grade level based on the elements and principles of art, a set of art prints online, and suggested art projects. Another ISF grant this year enables us to offer a training per month with professional instructors, a single day conference for all docents, and begin to put together an online presence creating a virtual art docent community.
This program fills the gap between what the district funding can provide and what our kids require. We truly appreciate the generosity of the principals, class room teachers, and the parents who support our PTA’s and in turn the Art Docent program.
The Issaquah PTSA Art Docents One Drive contains art information, goals, documents, lesson plans, and pictures.
Additional Lesson Plans by grade level. (Thank you to Donna Gelinas for posting these lesson plans.)
