Sammamish Plateau Parent Networking Group

The Sammamish Plateau Parent Networking Group will meet at the
Sahalee Fire Station, 228th Ave. NE, across from Deerfield Park

Monday, February 22, 11:30am - 1:30 pm

More than half of all teenagers have had sex before they are 18 years old. Therefore, it is not surprising that a teenager contracts a sexually transmitted disease every 10 seconds in America and over 3,000 teenage girls become pregnant every day. At our next Sammamish Plateau Parent Networking Meeting, we will be watching a video called “The Truth about Sex”; one of the seven award-winning programs created for Paramount Productions, called The Teen Files, narrated by Leeza Gibbons and produced by Arnold Shapiro, who created the documentary “Scared Straight” nearly 25 years ago.

This program forces teenagers to face the hard-hitting realities of having sex too young, including unwanted pregnancies and STD’s. Teens discuss the struggles of becoming parents at such a young age, while another young couple faces the possibility that they could be pregnant. Also, a group of teenagers participate in a “mock AIDS test”, and Lisa, a 33-year-old heterosexual woman with full-blown AIDS, shares her story.

This is a powerful program that I would recommend for everyone to see! When I first shared it with my kids who were in junior high school at the time, they agreed that it was something everyone needed to see. Please join us for this informational and emotional presentation!

“The Truth about Sex”
~ one episode of the 7 part award-winning series, The Teen Files ~

Feel free to bring a friend! We will have plenty of time to discuss the video and share our thoughts with one another about its content. All of the Teen Files programs cover important subjects and I hope that you will make time to attend this meeting. During this month when we celebrate Valentines Day, let us take a serious look at the consequences of teens letting young emotions run away with them. A moment of indiscretion can affect the rest of their lives…

***For more information about the Sammamish Parent Networking Group, contact Cherry O’Neill at dwo-mci@msn.com or call 425-868-2111 (home) or 206-550-3809 (cell).

The Clark Elementary PTSA Presents
Battling Bullies Today with speaker Jan Faull

Monday, March 15, 7 PM - 8:30 PM
Clark Elementary Multi-Purpose Room

No one likes bullies and the attacks they make on their victims. Most children are neither bullies nor victims, most are bystanders watching or trying to ignore a bullying situation.

What can parents and teachers can do?

Jan Faull, M.Ed, a local child development and behavior specialist, will offer some answers to this burning question. She has written several books, taught for BCC parent groups, Evergreen Hospital and Overlake Hospital. She has a weekly column in the Seattle Times and speaks nationally to parenting groups.

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear this local parenting expert give realistic advice on this topic that is becoming more prevalent in schools today.

The Beaver Lake Middle PTSA Presents
Resisting Raising Children Who Feel Entitled
with speaker Jan Faull

Tuesday, April 20, 7 PM - 8:30 PM
Beaver Lake Middle School Commons

In affluent communities it is easy for children to acquire an attitude of entitlement. How often have you bought something for your child just because they wanted it or their friends had it? Parents know it is not in their child’s best interest to indulge their every whim.

Come hear Jan Faull speak about Resisting Raising Children Who Feel Entitled. She’ll cover: How do parents teach responsibility and accountability instead? It’s tough, but worthwhile because children who learn to delay gratification have better long term outcomes.

Please join us in the BLMS Commons on April 20th.

Issaquah PTSA Council Presents
Getting to Calm:
Cool Headed Strategies for Parenting Your Teen and Tween

by Laura Kastner, PhD.

Monday, May 17, 7-8:30 pm
Issaquah Middle School Commons
400 1st Avenue SE

Raising an adolescent is a daunting experience. We love our kids, but when they come across as bratty, defiant, thoughtless or irresponsible, we feel challenged like never before. New brain research is shedding light on the causes behind the chaos, giving parents insight into a better way to relate to their teen. With humor, wisdom and a deep understanding of the teenage brain, Dr. Laura Kastner will provide clear and useful tools for parents, giving them effective new ways to manage their own emotions in the heat of the moment with their teen while maintaining — and even gaining — closeness.

Dr. Kastner is a clinical associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Washington and a nationally-recognized expert on teen development and behavior. She is also a practicing clinical psychologist and co-author, with Jennifer F. Wyatt, of The Seven Year Stretch: How Families Work Together To Grow Through Adolescence, The Launching Years: Strategic Parenting From the Senior Year to College Life, and Getting to Calm: Cool-Headed Strategies for Parenting Teens and Tweens.

The Issaquah PTSA Council proudly welcomes Dr. Laura Kastner

Parent Education Mission Statement

Our purpose is to facilitate healthy growth of children and families within the Issaquah School District. This is done by providing parent education seminars, information, and access to community resources, which can provide guidance for parents to act on their children's behalf. We believe that when parents are serious about taking an active role in educating their children (physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially), they are building a strong foundation from which their children can mature into successful, responsible, young adults.
