FOCUS DAY

WSPTA Focus Day had an amazing turnout – around 6,500 people came to Olympia to advocate for education! Issaquah was well-represented by parents, teachers and students, as well as Superintendent Thiele, School Board President Lisa Callan, and Director Anne Moore. We had the opportunity to meet privately with legislators to talk about priority issues for Issaquah students. THANK YOU to all who filled out about 250 blue postcards with comments to legislators! Please keep them coming! This legislative session is just beginning and Olympia needs to hear from us. No doubt, our legislators are feeling the weight of great responsibility during this session. They also appreciate hearing “thank you” for a job well done.

HB 1059 – Delaying revisions to the school levy lid

This bill would allow a 12 month reprieve from the “levy cliff”. If it passes, this would give legislators another year to figure out how to fully fund education without relying on levies. In 2010, school districts were given authority to temporarily increase property tax levies by 4%. That allowance will expire at the beginning of 2018, in the middle of the next school year. That would mean a loss of about $7.5M to Issaquah schools next year. The good news is that the House has already voted to pass HB 1059. However, the Senate has not yet voted and there are some Senators that are expected to vote against this bill. They are listed below along with contact information. If you have friends or family in their districts, please urge them to contact these legislators!

Sample Letter:

I urge you to support HB 1059. Students are counting on you to keep teachers in classrooms next year. Our schools are trying to devise an operating budget for next year before April 1st. They are faced with the stress of uncertainty, and the possibility of having to RIF teachers. Levy dollars are voter approved. We cannot afford to lose teachers or funding in our schools. Thank you for taking care of our students by voting to pass HB 1059.

Family partnership and Cultural Bridges are going to support the Kindergarten registration event at Apollo, Issaquah Valley Elementary School and Clark.  We will provide volunteers to translate flyers, help ELL families fill out the Kindergarten registration forms, answer questions.  We will make robo-calls to remind the families about the event and anything else the schools need to welcome the new families.     

We are also going to provide the same help for Issaquah Middle School at the transition event on March 6th.

Do not leave today’s meeting without your school’s Reflections artwork!

Reminder that if your PTA paid any subcontractors more than $600 in 2016 that you must issue them a 1099 by 1/31.  Subcontractors include after school program providers, accountants, etc.  Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Also, your Financial Review Committee should convene this month to do your mid year financial review (for July – December).  Results should be shared with your membership and included in your meeting minutes.  More information (including the review checklist) can be found on the WSPTA website in the Money Matters handbook.

In case you have not attended Focus Day in the past, we want you to have lots of information so you will know what to to expect! Focus Day draws WSPTA members to Olympia with the intent of giving them an in-person view of how the legislative process works, and how they can engage in it to advocate for their children. It also provides an opportunity for you to meet your local legislators and personally convey your priorities for your children. There will be focus on the “Top 5” WSPTA legislative priorities, which were decided by vote at the 2016 WSPTA Legislative Assembly. You can view details on each priority, as well as other supported issues and long-term resolutions at http://www.wastatepta.org/advocacy/index.html.

Plan ahead to attend FOCUS DAY on January 16th, 9:00am-1:00pm in Olympia! This WSPTA event is an impactful day for advocates of education. You will be able to rally on the steps of the state capitol with other advocates, and will have a chance to greet your legislators face to face! Since January 16th is a “no school” day, it is also an opportunity to involve your children in speaking up for education. Our legislators love to hear from kids!

The Lake Washington school district will be chartering a bus to Focus Day, which will be open to all of Region 2. Information on registering to ride the bus will be emailed to Presidents and Advocacy Reps. when available, along with detailed information about what to expect on Focus Day.

      • She is finalizing the staff to write, edit, compile and reformat the lessons we are using
    • Liz St.Andre is our tech lead – she will be insuring that our lessons are formatted and saved in a way that will work with our Schools Foundation web site.  She and I met with Schools Foundation staff to make sure we are all on the same page.
    • Volunteers have met three times to sort through and assign lessons to their respective subjects & grades.  Those will be processed as we move forward.
    • Lessons that have been taught at our Docent Conference’s and/or paid for by Schools Foundation grants have been tagged. Most of those will find a home in our curriculum.
    • We will be asking for more lessons to fill holes we will have in the New Year.

• Start promoting the WSPTA’s Men Making A Difference” student essay contest. This is a great opportunity for students to write essays about an important male role model. 2016-17 Essay Entry must be postmarked by 3/1/17. For SoE app: Print example of how you promoted the contest to your members(e.g., eNews/FB/website/etc.).  A great activity for students to do during Winter Break!

• Continue asking for volunteers to serve on your PTSA/ PTA’s Nominating Committee.  If slated, consider electing your Nominating Committee during your December GM Meeting.

• Share an article or information from Council, Region 2, WSTPA and/or National PTA with members (at GM meeting, in eNews, on Facebook, etc.). Print examples for each using two different communication methods you regularly use to communicate with members. For Facebook, you will need to provide multiple posts from varying months to demonstrate regular communications. Information shared can be from a Council or Region training or meeting, WSPTA or National PTA websites.

o   Hold a mid-year retreat or meeting with your Board to discuss and evaluate your PTA’s achievements thus far and review what you need to do for the balance of the year to meet the goals and needs of your PTA. What is your PTA’s process to evaluate current year’s goals, programs and activities? (Surveys, suggestion box, post event evaluations, GM open forum, etc.).

(Our surveys show that attending parents are aware of our events mostly through PTSA, Facebook.  We have to PUSH the information in multiple channels, multiple times. We received a total of 264 entries from 23 schools. Gibson Ek did not send in any entries.

We are currently judging the entries. We are able to send a total of 53 to State plus the one Special Artist entry we received.

The Reflections Chairs from each school were given invitations to the Reception, when they dropped off their submissions on November 21st.

The District Reception is on TUESDAY January 10th 2017 at IHS from 6.30-8.00pm.

The finalists moving on to State will only be notified on January 10th.

Highlights from the ParentWiser Run, Hide, Fight presentation.
       – Kimberly Nocco

The following suggestions are mostly for adults and are relevant in many settings: office, theater, public gathering. The message that has been given to most younger students in the district is simply “Listen to your teacher/an adult in charge.”

If possible, RUN. Make sure your hands are EMPTY and held where police can see them. As a demonstration, one officer held a black phone while swinging her arms running – it really looked like it could be a firearm. If you take your phone or car keys, put them in your pocket or bra (seriously, he said that) and DON’T reach for them unexpectedly, you’ll get yourself shot.

If you can’t run, HIDE. Take cover – the spots recommended were behind large electrical boxes (contain copper, can stop bullets), behind a large concrete pillar, behind the FRONT end of a car near the tire (bullets go through the trunk area). If indoors, lock/barricade the door, turn off phones/vibration (your family will call you and give away your hiding spot! And this goes the other way, don’t keep calling loved ones if they might be hiding).

Finally, if no other option, FIGHT. Work together. Be committed to incapacitate the attacker. Look for resources, even if unconventional – fire extinguishers, hot coffee, belt, chair…

Always FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS of first responders/SWAT, even if they seem unusual. They have a tactical reason for every request and don’t have time to be polite. As an example, the officer pushed a victim towards the center of the room to prevent injury from stray bullets bouncing off walls. The first responders are there to neutralize the threat, not help you, stay out of their way. When they arrive on the scene, they have a lot of information to take in quickly and decide who is the threat – don’t give them any reason to suspect you.

Delegate forms need to be submitted to the council secretary no later than the October meeting.

1. Make sure your Council Fees (Dues, SurveyMonkey Fee, Parent Ed Fee, and ACT Donation) are sent to me by October 31, 2016.  An invoice was sent out to all treasurers about this last week so they should know what needs to be done.
2. 990/990EZ/990N tax returns are due to the IRS by 11/15/16 (for the period of 7/1/15-6/30/16).  Please check with your treasurer to make sure this gets done.  You can file an automatic 5 month extension if necessary.  The state PTA website has great information on 990s if you need help.

Please register to vote! The deadline to register to vote online or by mail is October 10th.

Thank you all for contributing to a successful and resourceful parent ed experience across Issaquah School District this past year.  We increased parent ed attendance at most schools, and offered more frequent speakers and topics than previously.  Parents are showing interest in attending other schools to hear a worthwhile topic or speaker; in 2015-16 these were mostly around social lives (digital media, dating, playground behavior), and anxiety/mindfulness.

Thanks to your input and contributions, in 2016-17 Issaquah PTSA Council Parent Ed is moving in a new direction to support even more access to parenting information.  After meetings and input from Parent Ed Reps and PTA Presidents, we pleased to announce the new parent ed program for 2016-17:

• New name:  Issaquah PTSA Council parent ed is becoming Parentwiser, and will link to a separate webpage parentwiser.org next fall.
• Speakers, film documentaries, webinars for the 2016-17 school year will target the following topics:

2. Technology (use and abuse)
3. Parenting in competitive activities/sports

Following up on the feedback and input received from our parents, staff, students, and community, the Issaquah School District is continuing to consider new school start and end times for the 2017-2018 school year.  Superintendent Ron Thiele has committed to a decision on new start and end times by December of 2016.  To begin this next phase of the process, the community is invited to attend informational meetings to learn and dialogue with district staff about the issues around changing our start and end times, including sleep science studies, transportations, before/after school care, and potential effect on athletics and activities.

We’ll discuss how to avoid potential dangers as our kids navigate social media and the online world.  Kids don’t mean to run into trouble online, but their developing brains are curious and want to explore.  A large portion of middle schoolers already have internet-enabled devices and potential dangers include cyberstalking, cyberbullying, sexting, access to pornography, harassment, and assaults.  Learn how to keep your child safe and your family’s information private.  This is an adults-only event. Current Presidents – Please note in your evite RSVP if you are able to bring a *store bought* salad that serves 8-10 people. Pasta, quinoa & chicken salads are great options! Pickering Barn policy requires that all food served be prepared in a commercial kitchen.

The Ice Breaker question to ask your Principal this year is: “What was the first concert you attended, and what is the most recent one that you attended (that was not a school concert)?” You will be introducing yourself, new president(s) and principal.

2016-2017 Budgeting Information:

Although Council has not officially approved our 2016-2017 budget (this will occur at our May meeting), here are the proposed budget changes that will affect the local PTSAs.   I wanted to make sure you were aware of these changes as you are working on your budgeting for next school year.  Here are the items to make sure are in your budgets:

• Council Dues – Elementary $310, Middle $285, and High $260 ($50 increase).  We haven’t raised Council Dues in many years and this increase is necessary to keep up with the rising cost of things such as space rental, supplies, etc.
• Survey Monkey – $11 – No change
• Council Parent Ed Fee – $250 minimum (increase from $100) As we have discussed at the last few Council meetings, we are changing our approach to Parent Ed beginning next year.  We are aiming to provide higher caliber speakers next year as well as offering webinar options.  When our Council Parent Ed chair surveyed the presidents a few weeks ago, most were very supportive of this change and were all willing to donate more than $250.  Please discuss with your president/Board to determine how much your school is willing to give.  $250 is the minimum we are asking for but if you are willing to donate more, it would be greatly helpful in getting this new program going.
• Art Docent Training – Free!  ISF will now be funding Art Docent Training so elementaries will no longer need to budget $75.00 for Art Docent Training!
• New – Gibson Ek High School Donation – Gibson Ek High School will be chartering their own PTSA later this spring.  It is customary that when a new PTSA is established, that all other PTSAs include a donation to the new PTSA in their budget.  The suggested donation amount is $250 for elementaries, $500 for middle schools, and $1000 for high schools.  This is just a suggested donation amount so any amount your PTSA feels comfortable donating will be appreciated.
• ACT Program/Echo Glen – Please remember that donations are suggested the ACT Program and Echo Glen school, neither of which have their own PTSA.

Other Organization Support:

Volunteers for Issaquah Schools – Even though we won’t be running a bond/levy campaign next year (hopefully), it is always suggested that donations we made every year to VIS to help them build up a balance to run the next bond/levy campaign.

Issaquah Schools Foundation – Again, remember a donation to ISF in your budgeting process.  Many schools give a donation to the All in for Kids campaign in the fall, and another donation at the luncheon/breakfast in the spring.

Postage – Several questions have come up on the various amounts of postage that local PTSAs are asked to help with.  The first is the “3 Things Postcard”.  This is the postcard that comes out at the beginning of the year from ISF/VIS/PTSA.  The share your PTSA is responsible for depends on how many students you have.  The amount is pretty similar from year to year so please refer to how much you paid this year for budgeting for next year. You will receive an invoice from ISF in August/September for your portion of the mailing.  The second one is the VIS mailing.  This only occurs during a bond or levy campaign year.  This year, the amount ranged from $100-$400 depending on the size of your school. This only needs to be in your budget in a bond/levy year but many PTAs just leave it in so it doesn’t get forgotten.

Schedule for Incredible Intensity of Being Human

State of Mind Mini-Conferences:
Saturday, April 23, 12 noon to 4:00 p.m., Skyline High School

Adult and student members of HYI are invited to attend one, two or all three State of Mind mini-conferences focused on topics related to youth mental health.  Each school mini-conference will have a different focus, including how to cope with stress, how to help friends who are struggling with depression, or how to detach from technology. Each mini-conference will also offer a core of basic classes in topics such as the impacts of drugs on the developing brain, healthy relationships, body image, and living with mental illness. Registrations for these conferences, as well as programs with a list of speakers and topics, will be available by February 15th.

Annual Issaquah Spring Clean Event
Saturday April 23

This annual event sees youth leaders and adults getting together to focus on clean-up of Rainier Trail (beside the Issaquah Community Center and the old skate park).  Over the years, ITC has seen a major difference in the amount of debris including drug paraphernalia i.e. syringes and beer bottles, cigarette butts, etc.  YODA leaders (Youth Opposing Drug Abuse – the youth coalition of the Alliance) will be taking a lead this year in organizing the day of work.  Come out – everything is provided for you including gloves, tongs to pick up garbage, and garbage bags along with (as always) lots of goodies.   Good day to get some good exercise, meet some great people and do some great work for the community!  Email Katie Moeller for more information at Katie.hirshberg.moeller@gmail.com.

Incredible Intensity of Just Being Human — Kick Off Event
Friday, April 29, 6:00 p.m., Issaquah Senior Center

The Issaquah Schools Foundation and ArtEast are partnering on a project that will bring an art exhibit focused on the themes of mental illness and mental health to Issaquah schools and community.  The exhibit itself will run from April 18 through June 30th and feature juried art located at three different art galleries in the greater Issaquah area. In addition, the exhibit will serve as a platform for panel discussions, tours, and school/community art, poetry and music activities focused on the theme of mental wellness.  Everyone is invited to attend this kick-off event, which will be followed by a reception located at the ArtEast gallery on Front Street in downtown Issaquah.  Put this on your calendars! 1)    We’re excited to update you on some important developments in our Council sponsored parent ed.  Over the past few months, we’ve been taking a close look at parent ed events in our district and proposed some changes to make it even more convenient and relevant moving forward.  Please see the attached vision, which we proposed at the February PTSA Council meeting, for more information. We’ve been getting very positive responses from parents like you, PTSA Council, the Issaquah Schools Foundation, the Issaquah School District administration, and even external partners like Swedish Hospital.

Our goal is to create a sustainable model of parent education that gives parents in our school district the latest tools, strategies and information to be the best parents they can be, conveniently and affordably, and as a tangible benefit of PTSA membership. When parents have the information to parent well, their children’s brains can develop optimally, allowing them to live up to their true potential.

You are an important part of this vision. We’d like to get together with you this month and brainstorm speakers for our district for next year. To realize a speaker series, we need to book them this spring.  What speakers do you love? Who should be included in our annual lecture series, either in-person or via webinar?  What do you want to learn about as a parent? Ask around your school community, and let us know, we want to hear from you!

Presidents and/or Parent Ed Reps, please join us for a topic brainstorm in the lobby of Swedish Hospital, near the Starbucks, on Wednesday, April 20 at 10:30am.

Sivie Suckerman, Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Certified Mindful Schools Instructor, presents techniques and strategies for mindfulness at home and in the classroom. Mindfulness has been described as bringing moment-to-moment awareness to thoughts and feelings and the surrounding environment.  Such practices have been used by schools and companies to strengthen focus, decrease anxiety and encourage creativity.  This event is free to ISD parents and their families.

We’ll discuss how to avoid potential dangers as our kids navigate social media and the online world.  Kids don’t mean to run into trouble online, but their developing brains are curious and want to explore.  A large portion of middle schoolers already have internet-enabled devices and potential dangers include cyberstalking, cyberbullying, sexting, access to pornography, harassment, and assaults.  Learn how to keep your child safe and your family’s information private.  This is an adults-only event. Childcare will be provided in the IMS library.
